In a review published in Psychological Bulletin in 2007, Dutch researchers note that women’s higher risk of PTSD is one of the most consistent findings in the field. In their view, it may be explained by the type of trauma experienced and by the fact that women often experience trauma at a younger age.
What else may play a role
The authors propose a psychobiological model: a stronger sense of threat and loss of control during the trauma, more frequent dissociation (a sense of detachment), less social support, and sex-specific bodily responses to stress. They call for more research into these differences and for taking them into account in treatment.
What this means for you
- If you are troubled by intrusive memories, nightmares or constant tension after a difficult event, it may be PTSD.
- PTSD is treatable; trauma-focused psychotherapy is especially effective.
- Support from loved ones after trauma is very important.
